The most scenic byways are designated as All-American Roads and Scenic route 12 is the only All-American road in Utah.
Route 12 was the part of our 10 days long – Las Vegas and Canyonlands trip. We took Byway 12 from its intersection with US-89 and ended at Torrey/Capitol Reef via Bryce canyon.
I had no idea that this is to be a such a pleasant surprise. It is one of the highly recommended scenic drives, if you are going to Utah!
Now comes the bonus part, a quick detour in between will take you to Bryce Canyon. More details about Bryce Canyon can be checked in a separate post. If you are an Instagram person pull over several times (apart from marked view points) to enjoy clicking the changing landscapes. I don’t know how to describe the scenery it has everything from red rock walls, variegated buttes and mesas, balanced and slickrocks and rainbows. 😃 all I can say it’s amazing. See go it for yourself.
In between some part of road is steep and winding especially where it crosses the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It ascends and descends the Boulder Mountain, scary and beautiful at a same time. By the time we reached to Boulder weather has changed suddenly and we were lucky to get some amazing views.🌈🌈
Some pointers :-
- Stuff your car with ample water and ready to eat snacks, it’s going to be a long drive and big stretch of road is deserted in between
- Its better to refill gas tank before entering into Byway 12, we don’t exactly remember but we hardly saw 2-3 gas stations in the entire route
- Keep an eye on marked viewpoints, sign boards at viewpoint are informative
