Valley of Fire – beautiful escape from Las Vegas

Valley of Fire is the oldest state park in Nevada. It is located 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas and features red sandstone rock formations and petroglyphs carved into boulder and rock which looks like on fire when reflecting the sun’s rays.

There are two entrances, west and east and guard is available at each gate. You pay $10.00 entrance fee and they give you a map with all the sights to see.

Valley of Fire is a photographer’s delight, so many opportunities to click the amazing rock formations. We got there early morning of summer and we had the park practically to ourselves. The slant light on the rock formations illuminates like neon. It feels like a long ride to hike to the rock formations, but it is definitely worth it. After visiting most of the parks of Utah, Arizona and Nevada we thought that we had enough of rocks, but valley of Fire is definitely a place contemplate the infinite and enjoy the windswept beauty of nature.

There are about 9 must see attractions that can be covered while driving. You can also find them marked in map Petroglyphs, Atlatl Rock, Arch rock, Elephant Rock, Petroglyph Canyon, Mouse’s Tank, Rainbow Vista, Hoodoos.

Also, plenty of hiking trails and beautiful, unique scenery for picture taking.

We stopped and had lunch on a huge red rock of rock-bedded sandstone. But there are plenty of restrooms and picnic tables available in park. Valley of Fire is must visit attraction when you are in Vegas, givers you a nice break from the strip you go from one extreme to another and the whole experience amazing.


Some pointers:-

  • Driving speed limit is 35 mph, for speeding rangers can give you a speeding ticket
  • The visitor center is located in the middle of the park and has nice displays about the park.
  • If you drive up on the highway from Las Vegas, you should return through Lake Mead Recreational area along the shore of the lake to see some great views.
  • Make sure to bring hats, lot of water and sunscreen if you are visiting in the summer
